Make one diamond
Completed stitches are shown in blush, the stitch in progress in red, and the next hole circled in blue. Each diamond is short-long-short, then a skipped hole.

Come up at 1, go down at 2 — a short upright stitch over two canvas threads (spanning two threads).

Come up at 3, go down at 4 — a long upright over four, beside it — reaching one hole higher and lower.

Come up at 5, go down at 6 — a short upright over two again. Short, long, short makes a little diamond.

How the diamonds interlock
The gap beside each first-row diamond is not a permanent window — it is where the next row fits. Row two is worked in the opposite direction and dropped down so its long center stitch slides into that gap. Interlocked, the diamonds fill the canvas as a regular field, not an open lattice.

This is normal: the counting — two, four, two, skip — feels slow at first. Say it as you go and the diamonds start to appear on their own.

Common mistake — and the fix
Keep the skipped hole between diamonds in a row, then drop the next row so its long stitch fits into that gap. Skip the nesting and the groups jam together and lose the interlocking diamond field that makes Hungarian, Hungarian.
