What it is · why it matters

A tent stitch is the small diagonal stitch that covers one canvas intersection. Nearly every beginner design is made of these, worked in rows. Learn this one stitch and you can fill almost any printed canvas — everything else is a variation on it.

What you’ll need

  • Your printed canvas, thread, and blunt tapestry needle
  • Good, even light
  • About ten quiet minutes

Exactly what to do

  1. Bring the needle up through one hole from the back.
  2. Cross diagonally over one intersection of the canvas.
  3. Go down through the hole on the diagonal.
  4. Come back up in the next hole along the row.
  5. Repeat — same slant every time. That sameness is what makes it look neat.

Left-handed? The slant and the “up here, down there” holes are the same — just mirror the working hand. A left-handed close-up is reserved for the video.

Checkpoint — what yours should look like

A short row of stitches all leaning the same way, each sitting over one intersection. Gaps of canvas peeking through are fine for now — that’s a coverage fix, not a mistake.

Your first few will lean at slightly different angles. They even out fast — this is practice, not talent.

What you’re aiming for

Common mistake: the stitches slant different ways.

The fix: pick one diagonal direction and keep every stitch going the same way. If one’s wrong, gently pull it out and redo it — the canvas doesn’t mind.
